eBid And PayPal Spoof/Phishing Email Warning
Be on the look out for spoof / phishing emails involving eBid.net that are currently doing the rounds, They look like they come from PayPal with headings such as “Your Payment Agreement with eBid has been created” etc, the spoof emails contain a link that takes you to a fake paypal login screen, DO NOT click on the link.
Forward all fake paypal emails to spoof@paypal.com and then delete them.
Below is an example of a fake PayPal spoof email, so don’t be fooled:
“Dear customer,
You have set up a Payment Agreement to automatically pay your eBid seller fees with PayPal. The description of your agreement is shown below:
Description: eBid Seller Fees
If you did not authorize this agreement please click the link bellow:
(edited the link out and made safe )
Yours sincerely,
PayPalPlease do not reply to this email. This mailbox is not monitored and you will not receive a response. For assistance, log in to your PayPal account and click the Help link in the top right corner of any PayPal page.”
How the scam works:
If you click the spoof link in the email it takes you to a fake paypal login screen, the fake site collects your password and user-name and then may redirect and/or log you into the official paypal site giving the impression nothing bad has happened.
Please note:
Just by clicking the spoof link can also confirm your email address is active and your email address could be added to a spamming list, It is best to just delete the email and not let your curiosity get the better of you!
How do I tell the difference?:
Spoof or ‘phishing’ paypal emails tend to have generic greetings such as “Dear customer” or “Dear PayPal member”. Real emails from PayPal will always address you by your first and last name. Find out more here.
What should I do?:
Simply forward all fake paypal emails to spoof@paypal.com and then delete them. if you come across a fake site then report the site to paypal with this form https://www.paypal.com/ewf/f=pps_spf
If you have mistakenly filled in your username and password on the fake site then change your password now and let paypal support know what has happened and what you have done.
Please note:
Do not use the same password that you use for your email accounts on your ebid or paypal account, if you have, I would change them now!
